How to Fix Alkaline Soils in Boise, Idaho: A Practical Guide for Treasure Valley Gardeners

Successful gardening in the Treasure Valley starts with understanding your soil. Here in Boise, our native soils are often alkaline, compacted, and low in organic matter, which can make it difficult for plants to absorb the nutrients they need. Alkaline soil has a pH above 7, usually due to our dry climate and naturally high calcium carbonate content. This can lead to deficiencies in iron, manganese, and phosphorus—three nutrients essential for strong, healthy plant growth.

The good news: with the right amendments and ongoing care, you can transform alkaline soil into a productive, plant-friendly foundation.


Why Boise Soil Is Often Alkaline

Alkaline soil is extremely common throughout the Treasure Valley. Our region’s low rainfall, semi‑arid climate, and high mineral content all contribute to elevated pH levels. When soil becomes too alkaline, nutrients bind tightly to soil particles, making them unavailable to plants—even if they’re present in the soil.

For most garden plants, the ideal pH range is 5.8 to 6.2. There are certainly exceptions, but this is a general rule. Bringing your soil closer to this range improves nutrient availability, root development, and overall plant vigor.


How to Lower Soil pH in Boise

1. Test Your Soil First

Before making any changes, test your soil using a home kit or through the University of Idaho Extension. They are located at 5880 Glenwood street in Boise and their phone number is 208-287-5900. There is a charge from them for providing this service, but the cost is certainly worth the knowledge of knowing your pH and what it takes to change it. It can ensure that you are applying the right amendments in the right amounts.


2. Add Organic Matter

Treasure Valley soils are famously low in organic material. Adding Ferti-lome peat moss, Ultimate Potting Soil, Cowgirl steer compost or Oakdell chicken manure improves drainage, boosts microbial activity, and gradually lowers pH.

Organic matter is one of the most reliable long‑term solutions for our region.


3. Use Acidifying Amendments

Several products can help reduce alkalinity:

  • Elemental sulfur – The most effective long‑term acidifier is Hi-Yield Elemental Sulfur. With this product, soil bacteria converts the sulfur into sulfuric acid, lowering our soil pH gradually.

  • Iron sulfate – Using Hi-Yield Iron Plus lowers our pH and adds iron, which is often deficient in Boise’s soils.

  • Aluminum sulfate – Hi-Yield Aluminum sulfate works quickly but should be used sparingly to avoid toxicity.


4. Mulch with Acidic Materials

Pine needles, shredded oak leaves, and other acidic mulches slowly help reduce pH as they break down.


5. Avoid Lime and Wood Ash

These materials raise soil pH and should be avoided if your goal is to reduce alkalinity.

Plants That Thrive in Boise’s Alkaline Soil

If you prefer a simpler approach—or want plants that perform well even before soil improvements—choose varieties that are naturally tolerant of alkaline conditions: Here are a couple that work well in higher pH levels:

  • Lavender

  • Lilacs

  • Clematis

  • Yarrow

  • Sedum


Apply Amendments Gradually

Lowering soil pH is a slow process, especially in our mineral‑rich soils. Add amendments in small amounts, then retest every few months. Over‑correcting can damage plants and disrupt soil biology.


Improve Drainage and Aeration

Boise’s clay‑heavy soils often become compacted. Loosening the soil with a garden fork or tiller improves drainage and encourages beneficial microbes—This can be key players in lowering our soil pH.


Fertilizers for Acid-Loving Plants

Products containing sulfur‑coated urea help acidify soil while feeding plants. These are especially helpful for blueberries, hydrangeas, and other acid‑loving species. Does Epsom Salt Help Alkaline Soil?

  • Helps plants suffering from magnesium deficiency

  • Supports chlorophyll production in crops like tomatoes, peppers, and roses

What Epsom Salt Does Not Do

  • It does not lower soil pH

  • It does not acidify our alkaline soil

When to Use It

Use Epsom salt only if a soil test shows magnesium deficiency. Apply by dissolving 1 tablespoon per gallon of water and using as a foliar spray or soil drench every 2–4 weeks. Do not apply in hot weather.


Long-Term Soil Care for Treasure Valley Gardens

Maintaining balanced soil pH is an ongoing process. Here are strategies that work well in Boise’s climate:

✔ Test Soil Annually

Monitor pH and nutrient levels so you can adjust your amendments as needed.

✔ Rotate Crops & Use Cover Crops

Clover, rye, and other cover crops add organic matter and improve soil structure. This is especially useful in vegetable gardens.

✔ Use Organic Mulches

Mulch conserves moisture, suppresses weeds, and in some cases, it slowly acidifies the soil as it breaks down. Pine needles is the best mulch in acidifying the soil.

✔ Avoid Over-Fertilizing
